A bit of a change at About:Blank

If you have visited about:blank over the last 24hrs may have noticed we have had a bit of a change of clothes.

Not intentional unfortunately!

With the help of a colleague of mine, ive been working on a new look and feel for about:blank for a few weeks now, on and off, and am still undecided what route to go down.

But, if you have seen the site through IE or Safari over the last week, you would have seen that the previous theme was experiencing a few problems and it all came to a head yesterday afternoon when the theme completely broke (i am partly to blame i have to admit! ;)) so i had to bite the bullet and get a new theme up there.

Ive used the green-mercury version of the logo which im not entirely 100% sure is the right one.

Who better to ask for guidance than the readers themselves! Take a look at some of the other versions and let me know what you think.

Im still designing the site itself so its a bit rough round the edges at the moment but if you have any comments, let me know. Ive got a long way to go. I wish i could have just burst the new design on the site all done and completed but it wasnt to be. hey ho.

Cheers guys

  1. I kind of like the logo, and I kind of don’t. I think with any logo, the acronym K.I.S.S should be considered.

I think I would like it more if there were only a couple “splashes”. As it is now, the name of the site is totally cluttered, and it’s hard to read.

  2. P.S. If you take the last logo shown, and remove all the splashes except for the creamy green colored ones ( #D0E7AF ), I think it would look great. Oh, and not done in perspective either. That also makes the logo hard to read.

  3. It needs more contrast for the name to stand out, or “pop”. Green’s not my favorite color, but whatever color you use has to let the letters be easily read.

  4. The template is great.. very clean and easy on the eyes but the colors and logo not so much. I think it is really big for a logo and takes a lot of space (also leaving a lot of empty space on its sides).

About the colors, I couldn’t see a coordination in between (the different tones of green) and they are not quite complimentary if you ask me. They should be a little more “fluid” and maybe add one or two colors to go with it. If you insist on green, then I suggest you use the one like on CarrotCake and add in the yellowish-orange tone for a good mesure. Just my $0.02

  5. I’m with Sean – Keep It Simple. “Busy” logos tend to put me off (not that I’d stop visiting because of a new logo 😉 ), but from a colourblind person perspective, the randomly-coloured version is a bit… well, it looks like someone might have been a bit sick 😉

  7. I don’t care for the perspective angles and I think the splashes are a bit too busy, but overall, I like the template. However, I’m on a widescreen monitor and the page doesn’t stretch to fill the full width of the browser. There’s a good 3 inches of wasted space on the right. Would love it if the blog entries weren’t a fixed width!

  10. Thanks to all of you for all your comments. Ive tried to take as much as i can into consideration for the new design although im still not 100% happy with it.

Even though i absolutely love the new logo shape, i really dont like the treatment it currently has so i am working on that at the moment. I think im going to get rid of the 3D look and go back to 2D.

Im going to upload the eps of the basic shape just in case anyone would be interested in having a play with it.

    Im getting there.

If anybody has any suggestions on functionality etc and if there are any features you think i should integrate into the site, let me know.

    Thanks everyone!
